Hands on: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx reference laptop is a fresh attempt to be faster - storywiffaided1974

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx is the chip the companion hopes leave scale the performance mountain, reaching the heights that competitive Intel Core chips stimulate already surmounted. Subsequently trying it at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui, we send away pronounce IT seems promising.

As we learned Thursday morning, the Snapdragon 8cx was designed as a ground-functioning, optimized design specifically for laptops. Its mission is to achieve performance comparable to that of an Intel U-series Center i5 chip.

Qualcomm supplied a modest figure of Snapdragon 8cx reference notebooks at the event, all running Windows 10 Pro. Wetried to navigate to one of the WWW-based benchmarks we've accustomed test previous Snapdragon PCs, merely we were told that benchmarking wasn't allowed. In part, that's because the time speeds of the chip haven't been formally stubborn.

We were nevertheless able to have a look at three things: the overall responsiveness of the Snapdragon 8cx weapons platform, and two browsers: a Firefox Nightly establish optimized for ARM64 chips comparable the 8cx, A well as a first look at the Chromium (non Google Chrome!) open-reference web browser that Qualcomm is portion develop.

(For a closer view the challenges cladding Qualcomm American Samoa it pursues Intel, check out out my colleague Gordon Mah Ung's picture, which compares Intel and Qualcomm chips in a jolly specific shootout.)

Plain-jane hardware

Because Qualcomm's a chip company, we didn't carry to experience a good deal in the way of unique ironware—and we didn't. The consultation notebook was a fairly standard touch screen convertible (360-degree hinge), with a pair of USB-C ports on the side. That's a plus, because the first Snapdragon-supported Asus NovaGo used a proprietary courser.

The other side of the laptop included a SIM expansion slot. While the initial Snapdragon 8cx machines will be built around LTE, they'll eventually gain 5G capabilities, Qualcomm executives said.

Snappy and tractable

Qualcomm put in demo stations to show the 8cx in action. In the video below, you'll realise some alkalic work with media-heavy sites and YouTube. Elsewhere in the demo room, Qualcomm employees loaded sprouted the new ARM64-optimized Firefox web browser atomic number 3 well American Samoa Edge, alongside Photoshop, then navigated back and forth, scrolling up and down.

We were told later that Verizon was throttling the download speeds of 4K YouTube videos, prompting the come out-and-give up deportment you reckon. Vimeo was left unthrottled, and played back 4K videos just fine. We also managed to crash the prototype device, hard-locking it in the course of normal use. Apparently some bugs still need to be worked down before the chips are likely to ship in actual products, in Q3 2019.

Still, we can hope that these demos represent last performance expectations. We besides hope the long battery life, pervasive connection, and "instant happening" wakefulness hang in into shipping products.

Firefox and Cr

We looked at how Firefox runs on the Snapdragon 8cx, specifically the version coded for the ARM64 instruction set. Through we didn't tug it hard, it certainly looked and felt like the Firefox desktop browser we love. (The darker logo is put-upon to distinguish the Nightly beta builds from the many stable, full-time builds.)

A Qualcomm employee shows off the Firefox Nightly browser connected the left screen, with Chromium on the right. Some are coded for ARM64, the pedagogy set secondhand by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx.

The video below shows off both Chromium and Firefox Nightly, with several media-rich tabs, running on the same machine. There's little lag, which is a testament to the web browser developers A well as to Qualcomm. (Note: To correct something I enjoin in the video, the Boundary browser hasn't beenrequired by a Snapdragon chip. Rather, because the first Snapdragon-based notebooks shipped with Windows 10 in S Mode, they were circumscribed to using Edge.)

Tout ensemble, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cxlooks good—but and then did the first Snapdragon 835-powered Asus NovaGo. We too don't know what will Intel and AMD will have up their arm in the meantime. It appears that 2019 leave be a busy year for mobile CPUs.
